Lake Como Design Festival announces the dates and title of its sixth edition: “Lightness,” from September 14 to 22, 2024. Lightness serves as the guiding theme for this new event, leading visitors through a widespread journey to explore exhibitions and site-specific installations in the city of Como and around its lake.
Never as in this moment do we need lightness, that same one described by Italo Calvino in his “Six Memos for the New Millennium”: the lightness “associated with precision and determination, not with vagueness and indulgence to chance.” A constant need over time that has always pushed us toward the illusion that we can ignore the force of gravity and get closer to the sky. From Leonardo’s mechanical flight to the construction of the Tour Eiffel, from the use of glass to that of aerogel, “light thinking” has always involved different fields – literature, theater, art, design, architecture, physics, chemistry – and now it takes us on a new date, where lightness finds the right balance between form, material and movement.
“This year’s edition will be characterized by some confirmations and, at the same time, by many significant novelties,” says Lorenzo Butti, the creator and artistic director of the festival. “The growing enthusiasm of the audience and an increasing involvement of institutions and local entities have allowed us to work on ever more ambitious projects, once again spanning across different disciplines and locations. In this perspective, the theme of lightness is understood as a modus operandi: the ability to step back from things in order to comprehend them deeply.”
